First-Year Portal: MyPCC
Before there was LancerPoint, or even formal discussions of such a system, a small group of PCC faculty and staff decided to go to the students and ask them what they would want in a “one-stop-shop” online environment at PCC. The First-Year Portal Working Group (FYPWG) researched tools and resources that could better serve the educational goals of PCC’s students while concurrently fulfilling many of the goals of PCC’s Educational Master Plan. They searched for and studied similar environments and solutions at sister institutions. They held extensive focus groups and one-on-one interviews with a wide range of PCC students. Then they took all of that research and transformed it into a living, breathing, fully interactive online research document in the form of a First-Year Student Portal they called MyPCC.
What is a First-Year Student Portal?
It’s an online environment that links all of the components of PCC (faculty, staff, courses, technology, programs, and services) into a personal itinerary to help students succeed in their college experience.
Components include:
- Matriculation
- Class Registration
- Certificate and Degree Status Check
- Transfer Progress
MyPCC In Action
MyPCC was tested by a pilot group of over 300 PCC Pathways students during the Fall 2011 semester. These students had their own personal accounts in the portal, providing them with tools, resources, social networking, progress tracking, and more. Their participation, feedback, and the analytic data gleaned from MyPCC directly informed the requirements for development of PCC’s current LancerPoint portal.
