Project 90 Leadership Journey Managers’ Workshop Outline
Leadership Journey Overall Goals:
- Help participant understand and internalize the incredible opportunity that Pasadena City College has to “set the bar” for all other colleges in serving students and the community
- Begin building leadership capacity within the Executive and Management communities to effectively plan, lead and engage the larger college community in order to sustain the changes required to achieve PCC’s EMP goals
- Understand the process of change and transition at a personal, organizational, and institutional level, and begin the journey of learning and teaching to help all PCC managers, faculty, and staff effectively move through the currents of a major organizational transformation
- Help PCC leaders connect their hearts and minds to PCC’s new vision, EMP, and program reviews
Week 1 of the Learning Journey
Monday Afternoon
An interactive conversation with Dr. Mark Rocha regarding the opportunity for PCC to be the leader in community college education
- Why change and why now?
- What’s changing and how will it affect all of us?
- What are the implications for change and what’s expected of the leadership team?
- How will we lead and manage the change
An overview of Project 90 Leadership Journey
- Meet the consultant team that will help us
- Understand more about the overall program
- Define learning objectives for the first 2 weeks
- Introduce coaching trios concept
Identification of enablers and barriers to change at PCC
- Learning from each other
- Prioritizing key enablers & barriers
- Understanding the implications for moving forward
Tuesday Morning
An interactive workshop about change and transition
- Understanding the distinctions of change vs. transition
- Distinguishing individual, organizational and institutional change
Useful tools for leaders in managing change and transitions
- How to effectively deal with endings, transitions, and beginnings
- How to appreciate and manage four phases of change
Understanding why transformation efforts often fail
- Eight key lessons to remember
- How will PCC lead and manage its transformation?
Wednesday Morning
An interactive workshop about authentic communication and essential skills for effective collaboration
- Understanding the cycle of value and waste, and the implications for effectively managing change
- Understanding the three laws of conversation
- Appreciating bio-reactions and how it limits your effectiveness
- Understand the four distinctions of the conversation meter
- Appreciating the power of listening
- Understanding your choice as a leader
Thursday Morning
An interactive workshop about personal strengths and the implications for project management and collaboration
- Understanding the success/satisfaction cycle
- Assessing personal strengths (self and others)
- Learning about 4 key strengths: synthesizing, interacting, analyzing and concluding
- Determining your key strengths
- Understanding the implications for working together and EMP projects
Wrap up for Week 1
- Reflections and key learning
Week 2 of the Learning Journey
Note: Throughout the week participants will:
- Create a series of “personal” videos that will be posted on the website that address how they connect to PCC’s vision and the program review
- Help create a “visual” mural around the Leadership Journey room. This mural will show visual examples of their understanding of trust, collaboration, engagement, comfort zones, hearts and minds, vision, etc. This can also be posted on the website as well.
Monday Afternoon
Establishing coaching trios for learning and support
- What are coaching trios and how will they help us through this transformation?
- Appreciation of the special nature of coaching trios
- Selection of coaching trios
- Practice and exercises to learn how to be an effective coaching trio
Tuesday Afternoon
Coaching trios begin work on development projects applying all that was learned during Week 1
- Trios choose between 2 development projects to work on: program reviews or effective communication infrastructure
- Trios working on program review will begin by discussing the traits, characteristics, or tools needed to create a program review that consists of collaboration, engagement, creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, etc.
- Trios working on effective communication infrastructure will begin by assessing what’s currently working and not working, then consider creative strategies/solutions to improving communication based on a set of guiding principles
- Trios report-out to each other to learn and look for synergy & best ideas
Wednesday Afternoon
Coaching trios continue working on development projects
- Trios refine their ideas and begin to collaborate with other same topic trios to converge around a common solution and set of recommendations
- Trios continue to collaborate and converge on a common solution and set of recommendations for moving forward
- Trios reflect on the their individual and trio learning, and how well they applied their learning’s from Week 1
Thursday Afternoon
Coaching trios work on:
- A presentation and an activity that engage their constituents on Program Review and the EMP. This presentation will be given at the first Division meeting of the Spring 2011 semester and will lead to ongoing communication and constituent engagement within the division or department.
- Plan a field trip to a local community college that has gone through major transformation (The planning team will provide suggestions.)
Wrap up for Week 2
- Coaching trios have time to debrief and reflect on their learning experience over the 2 weeks
- Coaching trios make commitments to meet on a regular ongoing basis
- Group provides evaluation and recommendations on overall program
