Math Jam Wins Prestigious Bellwether Award
The Community College Futures Assembly (CCFA) announced that Alamo Community College (Texas), Pasadena City College (California), and Quinebaug Valley Community College (Connecticut), were the 2012 winners of the prestigious Bellwether Awards, which recognize outstanding and innovative programs in community college education. In this follow up to the bestselling Always Running, Rodriguez shares his post-gang life, describing his challenges as a husband and a father and his difficulty leaving rage, addiction, and the deadly lure of gang life behind.

Professional Learning Event: Effective Strategies for Teaching First-Year Students
This professional learning event was organized and lead by Shelagh Rose and Nika Hogan. There was a brief overview of the First-Year Experience (FYE) Pathways program; a demonstration by Rhea Presiado of My PCC, the student “portal” being piloted by the FYE students, and a discussion of research-based perspectives on first-year students in a structured workshop format offered for adaptation by participants for their own instructional use.

The First-Year Experience Speakers’ Series: Dr. George Boggs
Dr. George Boggs, distinguished author and president/CEO emeritus of the American Association of Community Colleges, kicked off the First-Year Experience series with a presentation that outlined what we are learning from Achieving the Dream, CCSSE, and SENSE as well as First-Year Experience programs in preparing community college students for educational success. Rodriguez held a book signing event immediately following his presentation.

New Faculty Learning Community: Guest Speaker Laura Hope
Guest speaker Laura Hope helped kick off of the series of workshops and professional learning events for new faculty entitled “New Faculty Learning Community: Innovative Teaching for Social Justice.” Coordinated by Beverly Tate and co-facilitated by Nika Hogan (English Division) and Shelagh Rose (Languages Division), this series of events began in Summer 2011 with events continuing until Spring 2012 (See “Downloads” at the end of the full post for a copy of the syllabus).

Communication-Technology-Outreach Retreat
The Communication-Technology-Outreach Retreat, led by Pam Cox-Otto (see bio below), took place on July 29th, 2011. It was put together to help identify the kinds and types of communications that we love, hate, need more of, need less of, wish we had, hope we never see again, and envy in our competitors; all from the point of view of faculty, leadership, students and staff. The results of this retreat will become the set of benchmark around which a comprehensive communication plan and protocol will be established. The goal is to do more with less effort, respond more quickly to market changes, and speak with one voice to our critical public.
Action Research for Teachers (A.R.T.)
On July 5-8, 2011 Pasadena City College hosted the first annual Action Research for Teachers (ART) Institute. Open to all faculty members from PUSD, PCC, and area CSUs, this institute provides an opportunity for professional learning and dialogue across the levels and disciplines.
The ART Institute focuses on effective approaches to classroom inquiry. Faculty across the levels face differing demands regarding assessment and accountability, and this institute provides an opportunity for dialogue focused on curiosity rather than compliance.
